How it works

How to use Webtor instead of uTorrent Web

No installer, no tray application, no account. Open the site in the browser you already have and go from a magnet link to a playing video or a saved file in three steps.

1

Open Webtor.io in any browser

Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge — on Windows, Mac, Linux, a Chromebook, Android or an iPhone. There is nothing to download first.

2

Paste a magnet link or upload a .torrent

Paste the magnet link into the box, or drop the .torrent file onto the page. Webtor.io's servers connect to the swarm; your device does not.

3

Stream or Download

Click Stream to watch the video right away, with seeking and subtitles, or Download to save any file from the torrent over HTTPS.

Open Discover
Not sure what to watch?

Explained

What uTorrent Web is — and what Webtor does differently

uTorrent Web (also called uTWeb) is a desktop program for Windows and Mac. Its own page says so: it is software you download, and once installed it opens in a new tab of Chrome, Firefox or Opera. It runs in the system tray, saves downloads to a folder on your computer, seeds them back to other peers, and can play video while the download is still running. BitTorrent Web works the same way and has the same free and paid tiers.

Webtor.io is a web page and nothing else. There is no installer and no process left running on your machine: Webtor's servers join the swarm, fetch the torrent, and hand your browser a video stream or a file over ordinary HTTPS. That is why it works the same on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, Android and iPhone — there is no version to download for each of them.

A local client is still the better tool for some jobs. uTorrent Web keeps a full copy of every download on your disk, can go on seeding to other peers after the download finishes, and the files stay available offline. If you want to seed, or you download large archives you will keep for years, install a client. If you want to watch a video or grab a file right now, on whatever device is in front of you, open Webtor.

Comparison

Webtor vs uTorrent Web

As a uTorrent Web alternative, Webtor also lets you work with torrents from a browser tab — the difference is where the torrent client actually runs.

Webtor
  • • Nothing to install: a web page that opens in any browser on any OS
  • • Webtor's servers join the swarm; your device makes only HTTPS requests
  • • Streams video as it loads — MKV and AVI are transcoded on the fly — or saves any file from the torrent
  • • Free to use, no account needed
uTorrent Web
  • • A program you download and install on Windows or Mac; its interface opens in a tab of Chrome, Firefox or Opera
  • • Your computer joins the swarm, downloads from peers and seeds back to them
  • • Plays video and audio while the download is still running
  • • Saves every download to a folder on your computer; free BASIC tier plus paid plans

Without a subscription, Webtor streams and downloads at up to 5 Mbps; a paid plan raises that limit.

The uTorrent Web and BitTorrent Web details come from utorrent.com, bittorrent.com and their help centers, as of October 2026. uTorrent Lite, the browser-only page from the same makers, is a different product and is not covered here. uTorrent and BitTorrent are trademarks of their respective owners; Webtor is not affiliated with or endorsed by them.

Benefits

What you get by skipping the install

uTorrent Web installs a torrent client on your computer; Webtor runs its own on its servers — so the browser is the whole setup.

Works on computers where you cannot install software — work, school, a borrowed laptop
Your IP address never joins the swarm; peers see Webtor's servers, not your device
Watch while the torrent is still downloading, with seeking, subtitles and audio-track selection
Nothing runs in the background and nothing is left on your disk unless you download it
Devices

One page for every OS

uTorrent Web ships for Windows and Mac; on Linux its site offers only uTorrent Classic, on Android a separate app, and it lists no uTorrent Web build for iPhone or Chromebook. Webtor is the same web page everywhere.

Windows and macOS — Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, no installer
Linux and Chromebook — any browser, no package to install
Android — Chrome or any other browser, no app from the store
iPhone and iPad — Safari, with downloads saved to the Files app
Safety

Is it safe to use Webtor instead of uTorrent Web?

With a local client such as uTorrent Web, your computer joins the swarm and seeds back to other peers — and peers in a swarm see each other's IP addresses. With Webtor.io the torrent is handled on the server: your device makes ordinary HTTPS requests, peers never see its IP address, and nothing is installed or left running. Webtor itself, like any website, does see the requests you make.

FAQ

Common questions

Quick answers to the things people ask most.

Is Webtor.io free to use?

Yes, Webtor.io is completely free for basic use. You can stream and download torrents without creating an account. Optional paid plans increase bandwidth and unlock Vault cloud storage.

Do I need a VPN to use Webtor.io? Will my ISP see what I download?

No VPN required. All traffic between you and Webtor.io travels over HTTPS. Your IP address is never exposed to the BitTorrent network because Webtor.io servers handle all peer communication. For your ISP, using Webtor.io looks no different from visiting any other website.

Can I use Webtor.io on a phone or tablet?

Yes. Webtor.io works in any modern mobile browser on iOS and Android. You can stream video, listen to audio, and download torrents without installing any additional apps.

What video and audio formats does Webtor.io support?

Webtor.io supports instant streaming for most popular formats. Video: AVI, MKV, MP4, WEBM, M4V, TS, VOB. Audio: MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, M4A. Files that require transcoding may take a moment longer to start playing.

Is Webtor.io an open-source project?

Yes, 100%. All components of Webtor.io are distributed under the MIT license. You can visit the GitHub repository to view the source code and contribute.

Can I watch my library on a smart TV?

Yes! With the Stremio integration you can stream your personal library on any smart TV or device running Stremio. Just install the addon using the link from your profile.

Can I use my own Jackett or Prowlarr with Webtor?

Yes. Add your indexer's Torznab feed URL in your profile and its results appear next to your Stremio addons — both on the Discover page and in the Webtor Stremio addon. Webtor doesn't search anything itself; it plays what your own indexer returns.

Can Webtor tell me when a new episode or release comes out?

Yes. Subscribe to an airing season or a movie — from the Discover page or a torrent page — and Webtor will poll your connected indexers and Stremio addons, then email you when a new release appears. It works like Sonarr or RSS automation, but with nothing to host.

How do I open a .torrent file in my browser?

Drag your .torrent file into the upload area at the top of this page, or paste a magnet link into the search field. Webtor opens it instantly — pick the video or audio file you want and stream it, or grab a direct download link. There's no torrent client to install and nothing to set up.

What can I use to open a torrent file?

You don't need to install anything — Webtor opens torrent files right in your browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS. Upload the .torrent file or paste a magnet link, then stream the video or save the files over a regular HTTPS download. Desktop clients like qBittorrent or uTorrent also work, but they require installation and connect your device to the torrent swarm.

How do I download files from a magnet link without a torrent client?

Paste the magnet link into the search field at the top of this page. Webtor acts as an online magnet link downloader: it runs the magnet download in the cloud and gives you a direct HTTP download link for each file, plus a built-in player to stream video and audio. Your browser never connects to the BitTorrent network — Webtor servers handle that.

How do I use a magnet link?

Paste the magnet link into the search field at the top of this page — Webtor opens it in seconds, with no client to install. You can also drag and drop a .torrent file instead. Webtor fetches the data on its own servers, so your browser never joins the BitTorrent swarm; you simply stream or download the files.

How do I download torrented files without a torrent client?

Paste a magnet link or upload a .torrent file at the top of this page. Webtor fetches the torrent on its servers and gives you a direct HTTPS download link for every file — nothing to install, and it works on any device. Your browser never joins the BitTorrent swarm, so no open ports or client setup are needed.

Read the step-by-step guide →
How do I unzip a torrent file?

A .torrent file is not an archive, so there is nothing to unzip — it's a small metadata file that only describes the real content. To get the actual files, open the .torrent with Webtor and download them one by one, or use the Torrent to ZIP tool to download everything as a single ZIP or TAR archive.

What is Discover and how do the AI recommendations work?

Discover is a recommendations page powered by AI. Open it from the main navigation, type what you want to watch (or tap one of the suggested chips), and Webtor returns a personalized list of films — each with a short reason explaining why it fits your taste and what you've watched before. Click any card to start streaming through your usual addons.

Is AI Discover free? How many requests do I get?

Yes — every account gets 2 free AI request(s) per day. Supporters of the project get 15 requests per day. Suggestion chips and the rest of the Discover catalog are unlimited; only the natural-language search counts against the daily quota.

What AI model powers the recommendations? Is my data safe?

Recommendations are generated by Anthropic's Claude — a fast model for the free tier and a more capable one for supporters. We send the model only your title/year/rating history. No email, IP address, or any other personal data is shared. The response is used purely to suggest films you can stream through your usual addons.

Do download links or streams expire?

Yes, for security reasons direct download links and streaming sessions are temporary and may expire after a short time. You can always refresh or regenerate them from your library interface.

Why do some downloaded ZIP archives show a CRC error?

ZIP archives are generated on-the-fly and don't include full checksum data, so some extraction tools may show a CRC warning even when the file is intact. That's why directory downloads now default to TAR — the TAR format has no per-file checksums, so even an interrupted and resumed download unpacks cleanly. If you prefer ZIP, pick it from the arrow menu next to the download button and use 7-Zip for best compatibility.

Why is my download or streaming speed slow on Webtor.io?

Speeds may vary due to the number of seeders, file format (some require real-time transcoding), your internet connection, current server load, and your account type. Premium users get higher bandwidth.

Note: bandwidth is measured in Mbps (megabits per second), while file sizes are shown in MB (megabytes). 1 MB = 8 Mb, so a 50 Mbps connection gives roughly 6.25 MB/s download speed. Supporting the project helps unlock better speed and reliability.

Torrent streaming vs direct download — what's the difference?

A direct download makes you wait for the whole file before you can watch it. Webtor streams the torrent instead: playback starts in seconds and nothing piles up on your device — and when you do want a local copy, you can still save the file as a regular download.
